Arts Organizations
The City of Richmond and surrounding areas are home to regionally and nationally acclaimed arts and culture programs. The city library system is noted for its excellence and the Community Heritage Project (a Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Fund project) identified dozens of community-based ethnic and folk art activities ranging from a Germanic folk choir, to Laotian handicrafts and African-American quilting traditions.
Central to the achievement of visibility of the arts in Richmond is the creation of a partnership with the major arts organizations, city departments and businesses. In 1995 the Commission Chair began monthly meetings with the executive directors of the five major arts organizations for the purpose of collaboratively addressing common concerns (Arts Forum Richmond). City officials are invited, as appropriate to the issue or information needed, as are community or business leaders.
